The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Hickory Dickory Dark Productions performs the musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood Friday, October 28; Saturday, October 29; Friday, November 4 & Saturday, November 5, all at 8 p.m. This witty musical mirrors the story of Charles Dickens' novel of the same name. With Direction by P. Wade Thompson and Musical Direction by Diane Trautman, Drood performances will be held at the Indian Head Black Box Theatre at 4185 Indian Head Hwy, Indian Head, MD 20640.

We open with the cast of the Royal Music Hall in London, where the rowdy group of actors is about to portray one of the greatest mysteries of Victorian England. Charles Dickens had begun writing this very mystery "when he committed the one ungenerous deed of his noble career: He died." Accordingly, the cast needs the help of the audience to decide the real ending of the show.

In the words of writer and composer Rupert Holmes, "I think this musical is ultimately about how fragile and precious each moment of life is. We should make no assumptions about what the future may hold or whether we have a place in it." He continues, "Simply surviving and savoring each blessed moment of life is reason enough to go on." All this being said, this musical is a comedy!

With characters like Edwin Drood, who is played by a woman, and his guardian John Jasper, a Jekyll-and-Hyde type choirmaster, the plot always keeps you on the edge of your seat. Edwin is set to marry Rosa Bud, who happens to be Jasper's secret love. Enter the curious brother and sister duo from a far off land to shake up the mix, and we've got the makings of a fabulous murder-mystery plot.

Who died? Whodunit? Who witnessed it? Who was the mysterious detective investigating the case? These are all questions the audience will answer near the final curtain, creating an ending that will never be the same from show to show! And, of course, as with any charming musical, it should end with a love song between two characters of the audience's choice.

The musical features, in order of appearance, Paul Rose of Leonardtown as Mayor Sapsea; Ryan Dolan of White Plains and Alex LaClair of La Plata as John Jasper on opposing weekends; Dave Bayles of Mechanicsville as Reverend Mr. Crisparkle; Kristin Kauffman of Lexington Park as Edwin Drood; Valerie Weitz of Potomac as Miss Rosa Bud; Charles Watley of La Plata as Neville Landless; Archie Parker of Washington, DC as Durdles; Sean Furlong of California as Deputy; Katie Ludy of Cobb Island as Princess Puffer; Alex LaClair of La Plata and Chris Lange of Port Republic as Bazzard on opposing weekends; Kelsey Hancock of Leonardtown as Helena Landless; and Tommy Ray Chedester of Mechanicsville and P. Wade Thompson as citizens of Cloisterham.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at halloweendrood.bpt.me/. Parking is available at the rear of the theater and in the community lot nearby.
