Maryland Summit on Energy Democracy and Affordability
Location: Francis Scott Key Auditorium, St. John's College, 60 College Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21401    View Map
Date: 3/24/2017
Start Time: 8:30 AM
End Time: 3:00 PM (06:30 Duration)

Energy and electricity are vital ingredients in life. Yet many Marylanders still struggle to afford their home energy bills, and face impossible choices between paying rent, paying for electricity and heating, buying medicine, or buying food. The current electric system is increasingly inflexible to the diverse needs of the population it serves, and do not offer many opportunities for people to control their costs, achieve savings, or assume any role other than that of a passive consumer.

However, Maryland's Public Service Commission has started taking steps to modernize its electric utilities. This is an opportunity to transform energy from a necessary burden in people’s lives into an engine of equity, prosperity, health, and empowerment—but Maryland's residents must have input into the decision-making process. How can Maryland’s policymakers, regulators, decision-makers and residents work together to leverage this moment of transformation and achieve a just, prosperous, environmentally-friendly energy future?

Join Marylanders for Energy Democracy and Affordability (MEDA) for a day of local and out-of-state perspectives, expert panels, and roundtable discussions focused on how Maryland’s Grid of the Future can facilitate energy affordability, increased efficiency, security, climate and environmental protection, as well as public health and welfare.

MEDA is a network representing low-income consumer advocates, climate action, community solar, and green jobs organizations united in promoting energy affordability, the transition to clean energy, social justice, economic equity, and climate resilience in Maryland. Network members include the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN), Fuel Fund (Maryland), Maryland SUN, the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, Earthjustice, and the Sierra Club (Maryland).

(Modern Musical) Phone rings, door chimes—in comes "Company," Stephen Sondheim's compelling, funny and heartfelt musical about love and marriage. Facing his 35th birthday, perpetual bachelor Robert finds himself questioning his singleton life. As he spends time with his friends, each at a different phase of married life, he sees their relationships at their best and worst—and most human—moments. Through their trials and triumphs, Robert begins to see the merits of not being alone, but "being alive."
