Date: 4/19/2016
Start Time: 5:30 PM
End Time: 8:30 PM (03:00 Duration)

The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) will host a Fermentation Demonstration Workshop on Tuesday, April 19th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the St. Mary's Agricultural Service Center, 26737 Radio Station Way, Suite C, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Join Rachel Armistead of The Sweet Farm as she demonstrates how to make raw, probiotic sauerkraut and pickles at home.

These days, it seems like everyone is talking about fermented foods. From claims that they can reduce a myriad of disease risks, to their role in mood and brain health, fermented foods are in the headlines and on people's minds. Is there content behind these claims? Can you make your own ferments at home, or for your customers?

Participants will learn about the basic history and benefits of fermentation, make sense of some of the health claims, and learn how to make a variety of fermented foods.

Workshop will consist of a demonstration and discussion of kraut and pickle making, a discussion of things to consider before making fermented foods professionally, as well as a look at The Sweet Farm's own journey from a small market stand to one of the premier fermented food producers in the region.

Space is limited to 45 participants on a first come, first served basis. Registration will close on Thursday, April 14th, 2016. Workshop fee is $20.00 and includes dinner. Register online at the 'News and Announcements' page at www.smadc.com, or contact SMADC staff at (301) 274-1922, Ex. 1.

It’s been 40 years since William W. Warner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book introduced us to the creature that’s been captivating diners and scientists alike ever since: the blue crab. Beautiful Swimmers Revisited is a documentary film that takes viewers on a journey around the Bay to look in on those who catch, study and eat blue crabs. The film demonstrates how science has evolved since Warner’s day to better understand the behavior of this enigmatic shelled creature.
