James Alvin "Sonny" Russell, Jr., 72, of Piney Point, MD passed away in his home on August 16, 2014. Born on April 14, 1942 in St. George Island, MD he was the loving son of the late Myrtle Poe Russell and James A. Russell, Sr.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Russell who passed away on May 5, 2014, and is survived by his first wife Carolyn D. Russell. Sonny is also survived by his children; Michelle Camaioni of Piney Point, MD, Daryl Russell of Staten Island, NY, Karen Gioia of Lexington Park, MD, Daniel Russell of Ridge, MD, Kristina Garcia of Mechanicsville, MD, Cynthia Welsh of Lexington Park, MD, Timothy Russell of St. Mary's City, MD, and 14 grandchildren. Siblings; Fay Lumpkins of Colorado Springs, CO, Jack Russell of Piney Point, MD, and Vivia Russell of Stewart, FL. He was preceded in death by his sister Gale Adams.

Sonny graduated from St. Michael's High School and was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County, MD. Sonny worked as a Merchant Marine for Reinaur Transportation for 42 years, retiring in 2012.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church St. George Island, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 11:00 AM in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church St. George Island, MD with Father Paul Nguyen officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers; Billy Goddard, Cully Cullison, Joe Nelson, Eddie Nolan, Jackie Russell and Dwayne Norris. Honorary Pallbearers; Daryl Russell, Daniel Russell, Timothy Russell, Jacob Russell, Russell Camaioni, Raub Camaioni, Christian Love and Michael Gioia.
