Elizabeth Cecelia (Huntington) Cairns Schetrom, 91, of Florida passed away on July 7, 2014.

Betty, as she was known to her friends and family was born on June 18, 1923 in a farmhouse, in the little town of Hughesville, MD. She was the 6th child of what would eventually be 18 children born to Marshall and Della Huntington. Growing up on the farm was not easy but her memories of it seemed to all be of the fun she had with her siblings and extended family.

At the age of 17 she moved to Washington, DC with her older sister to work. WWII was going on and DC was the place to find work and adventure at that time. What she found was the love of her life. Melvin R Cairns, Sr. Melvin was in the Air Force and when he was transferred to Pensacola, FL she soon followed him so that they could marry. Together they had 3 sons, Dickie Cairns, Eddy Cairns and Melvin Cairns Jr. They eventually settled in the Southern MD area, where she grew up and raised their family.

They were both very involved in their community with the Fire departments of Mechanicsville and Hughesville MD. Melvin and Betty were also involved with the Loyal Order of Moose and the American Legion. They were members and leaders at Old Fields Episcopal Church in Hughesville, MD for many years.

Upon retirement they moved to Melbourne, FL until the passing of Melvin in 1994. Betty was a widow for several years until meeting and marrying William Schetrom. Betty and Bill were married for 5 years before his passing in 2006.

Betty is survived by her three boys, Dickie, Eddy, and Melvin, Jr., along with their three wives, Linda, Carleen and Laura; six grandchildren, Sue Hill-Wildes, Robbie Cairns, Crystal Lake, Erica Cairns, Robert Cairns, and Marshall Cairns; and ten great grandchildren, with number 11 due in August. They are Jessie Hill-Dean, Deana Hill, Alexis Cairns, Kimberlee Cairns, Justin Bubba Cairns, Shalynn Cairns, Wyatt Cairns, Aubree Cairns (due in August), Kenneth Jay Lake III, Ethan Lake, and Collin Lake. Betty will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Arrangements provided by Brinsfield Funeral Home.
