Anita Victoria Adams of La Plata, MD passed away peacefully on June 2, 2014 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, MD.

She was born into a U.S. Army family at Fort Bragg, NC on June 27, 1942. She traveled to Germany in 1946 to join her Father who was with the U.S Occupation Forces. Returning in 1948, she settled with her family in Fredericksburg, VA.

Anita graduated with honors from Stafford High School in Stafford, VA in 1960. She attended Mary Washington College and later Germanna Community College, where she earned an A.A. Degree. She worked in Washington, DC with several lobbying firms and later with the U.S. Civil Service at Camp Lejeune and Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia, before entering real estate sales in 1984. Returning to school after moving to Maryland, Anita graduated Cum Laude from the University of Maryland University College with a B.A. Degree in Business. Anita retired as an Adult Services Social Worker from Charles County Department of Social Services in 2000.

She was active in the Christ Episcopal Church and the Clark Senior Center in La Plata where she was a regular with the Senior Show Troupe, the Red Hat Society, and a frequent volunteer in senior center and church activities. A recovering alcoholic with 36 years sobriety, Anita worked professionally and on a volunteer basis in the field of addiction recovery.

Anita loved plants and flowers and was an avid Maryland Master Gardener. She enjoyed time spent with her children and grandchildren and in traveling with her husband within the U.S. and on cruises to Bermuda, Canada, and Alaska. Anita was a breast cancer survivor and an activist for breast cancer awareness and research. Since suffering a stroke in 2007, Anita was a resident of Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center until her death.

Anita's parents, Frederick A. Adams and Hazel V. Adams, predeceased her as did her brother James F. Adams and her daughter Stephanie M. Burgess.

She is survived by her husband, Richard S. Lennon of La Plata; her beloved son Michael F. Burgess of Irwin, PA; and grandsons, Joshua, Andrew, and Jonathan Burgess.

A Family Visitation and celebration of life will be held on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 4PM with a brief Memorial service at 5PM at the Raymond Funeral Service Chapel, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Richard R. Clark Senior Center, 1210 Charles Street, La Plata, MD 20646 or the Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 10200 La Plata Road, La Plata, MD 20646.
