Joan Hewitt Burroughs, 80, of Mechanicsville, MD died on April 3rd. Mrs. Burroughs was born in Valley Lee, MD on June 23, 1933 to Irving G. and Edith C. Hewitt. She was preceded in death by her son, Henry P. Burroughs.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Benjamin H. Burroughs, Jr. and their children: Jerry S. Burroughs of California, MD; Michael L. Burroughs of Mechanicsville; Anne (Tom) B. Wetzler of Baltimore; and Mark D. Burroughs of Leonardtown. She is also survived by her six grandchildren; sister, Mary A. Hampton of Leonardtown; and many other relatives.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Francis E. Hewitt and Preston I. Hewitt.

She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1951 and from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in 1955. She was a teacher for the St. Mary's County Public School System including teaching Amish children at the Little Red Schoolhouse.

Mrs. Burroughs spent her life caring for and giving to others - her family, her friends, and her community. She enjoyed reading; gardening; spending time with her family; researching genealogy; and sending cards and reaching out to others for every occasion.

The family will receive friends at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD on Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 PM with prayers at 7 PM. A funeral service will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 28297 Old Village Road, Mechanicsville on Monday at 10:00 AM. Interment will immediately follow at All Faith Church Cemetery, 38885 New Market Turner Rd, Mechanicsville. Please omit flowers.
