He was born in Paisley, Scotland on August 18, 1932 to Thomas Brown and Annie Wallace (Campbell) Crawford. He graduated from Glasgow University with a degree in Civil Engineering. In his professional career, he lived and worked on four continents of the world, including the following countries, Scotland, Nigeria, Australia, South Africa and the United States of America.

Before settling in Southern Maryland, he had published more than 40 technical articles. In his spare time Campbell also published fiction stories, humorous essays, a series of scripts for The Men From The Ministry, a long-running show broadcast by Springbok Radio in South Africa, and A Gnome For Patrick script in the Father, Dear Father series, also broadcast by Springbok Radio.

He met and married Nance "Maureen" Galbraith in 1958 in Scotland. He began his professional career in the borough engineer's office in Paisley, served in the British Colonial Service, and worked for the federal government in Australia. In his latter career he worked for Mobil Oil in South Africa, specializing in asphalt. In 1981 he moved to the USA to work for the National Asphalt Paving Association, before retiring in the 1990's.

He is the father of John Crawford and his wife, Eleanor of Huntingtown Maryland, and Carol DeSousa and her husband, Victor of Sydney, Australia. He is the grandfather of John W. and Charles D. Crawford, Clair M., Craig C. and Bevan V. DeSousa.

Campbell had many hobbies and interests aside from his writings, including golfing, swimming, crossword puzzles, and running 5K races. He liked to stay current with technology and used his i-pad and computer to communicate with his many contacts around the world, often ending e mails with entertaining signoffs, such as TTFN (bye for now) or "its AGORA time". (it's Another Glass Of Red Aperitif time).
