Henry "Harry" Anthony Shorter, Jr., 83, of Benedict, MD passed peacefully June 16, 2013 at his son and daughter in law's home in Annapolis, MD. Born June 14, 1930 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Henry A. Shorter and Pearl Hitch Shorter.

Harry proudly served in the United States Marine Corps in the early 1950's. He later took over as the owner and operator of Shorter's Restaurant in Benedict, MD which was started by his grandfather "Captain Tobe" Shorter in the early 1900's. Harry served on the Board of Directors of Community Bank of Tri-County in Waldorf, MD for nearly 30 years and was also a member of the Board of Directors for Civista Hospital (formerly Physicians Memorial Hospital). Harry was known for his generosity to community organizations, including the Benedict Volunteer Fire Department.

Harry enjoyed being surrounded by his family and friends, travelling and dining in fine restaurants, but his true passion was the life of a waterman. He loved tonging oysters, crabbing, fishing and everything related to boats and the Patuxent River. He enjoyed life to the fullest.

Predeceased by his wife, Mary Anna Shorter, Harry is survived by his children Roy A. Shorter (Pamela) of Annapolis, MD, Melissa A. Tyner of Mechanicsville, MD, Stevie P. Shorter (Diana) of Mechanicsville, MD and Linda M. Keyton (Greg) of Dentsville, MD; also survived by one sister, Patricia Ann Graves, and seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends for Harry's Life Celebration on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 from 2:00 - 4:00p.m. and 6:00- 8:00p.m. at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. Prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 10:00a.m. at St. Francis DeSales Church, 7185 Benedict Ave., Benedict, MD 20612. Rev. Kevin Cusick will officiate. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3231 Mattawoman-Beantown Rd., Waldorf, MD 20601. Pallbearers will be Steven A. Shorter, Larry Graves, Kenny Graves, Josh Graves, Irving Chappelear, and Nick Genevie.
