Helen Mackey Landis, 88, of Lexington Park, MD died peacefully on April 17, 2013 at the Hospice House of St. Mary's in Callaway, MD with her family by her side. Born September 24, 1924 in Montrose, NY, she was the daughter of the late Edward Mills Mackey and Mae (Carey) Mackey.

She has made her home in St. Mary's County since 1942. Mrs. Landis was a member of Holy Face Church in Great Mills, MD. She was among the first civil service employees at Patuxent River Navy Base and she worked many years a Circulation Manager for the Enterprise newspaper. Mrs. Landis retired after many years as Executive Secretary for Cedar Point Federal Credit Union.

She was well known for her volunteer work at the St. Mary's Office on Aging Loffler Center and Ridge Elementary School. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and especially loved time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, bird watching and needlework.

Mrs. Landis is survived by her children, Edward Allan Hammett, Colton's Point, MD, Sharon Hammett Jorden (James), Park Hall, MD, Lynn R. Hammett (Freddie), Piney Point, MD and Nancene Cohen, Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, Michael Jorden (Jeannette), McDonough, GA, Alan Dunbar (Sarah), Virginia Beach, VA, David Dunbar, Glendale, AZ, and Kasey Dunbar, Chesapeake, VA; great grandchildren, Brandi and Jenna Jorden, Tucker and Tanner Dunbar, Ayden Tippett, and Levi and Marilyn Masters; sister, Margaret Corbin, Vass, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Allan Edward Hammett and William Ward Landis; her son, George Gibbons Hammett; her grandson, James Edward Jorden; and her brothers, Edward, Charles, and Bernard Mackey.

The family will receive friends for Mrs. Landis' Life Celebration on Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Prayers will be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Joseph A. Calis on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Face Catholic Church, 20476 Point Lookout Road, Great Mills, MD 20634. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Michael Jorden, Alan Dunbar, David Dunbar, and her nephews, Leo Corbin, Charles Mackey and Christopher Mackey.
