William (Bill) Donaldson Garrett of Waldorf, MD died on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. He was 82 years old. Bill was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1931 and later moved with his parents, Sara and A. J. Garrett to Washington, DC. He graduated from Anacostia High School in 1949.

He was married to and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris Arlene McCall Garrett. They had three children, Gregory William Garrett (deceased), Douglas Alan Garrett, and Julie Arlene Garrett Testerman. They have four grandchildren, Christina Arleen Garrett Morrow, Holly Arlene Testerman, Heather Arlene Testerman, and William David Testerman. They also have three great-grandchildren, Ava, Sara, and Michael Morrow.

William was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was very much loved by all and will be terribly missed.

William earned graduate degrees from George Washington University and also from Georgetown University. He worked at the Naval Research Laboratory for 30 years, retiring in 1986. He then took the position as Chief Scientist with ORINCON, a high technology corporation, where he was employed for another eight years.

William was a recognized expert in his field of science. He has served on technical panels for the National Science Foundation and was an invited participant in numerous national and international conferences and workshops. He has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research and was a member of numerous high-level scientific societies. He has participated nationally and internationally in studies in his field of expertise for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and United Nations technical groups. He was responsible for several patents important to the Navy and the civilian community. William was an invited speaker and session Chairman at the 20th Nobel Symposium in Sweden. He also was a recipient of the year for the coveted annual E. O. Hulbert Award from the Naval Research Laboratory for his high scientific achievements. He was a gentleman who contributed much to the military and to our society.

Visitation on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 11AM until time of Funeral Service at 1PM at Raymond Funeral Chapel, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, MD at 2:15PM.
