Edna M. Meads 81 of Accokeek, Md. died September 27, 2011 at her home. She was born on October 20, 1929 in Coinjock, NC to the late James and Pearl Meiggs.

She is survived by her husband who she married on September 18, 1950 Keith Meads, her daughter Lesley M. McKinley, brothers Ike Meiggs, Stanley Meiggs, William Meiggs, and Ralph Meiggs, sisters Doris Ley and Sandra Hooker.

She graduated Moyock High School May 1948 then taking a job at Belk-Tyler department store in Elizabeth City, NC. In June of 1951 Keith's job brought them to Maryland. She got a job in 1952 at the National Geographic Magazine headquarters in Washington, DC. In 1954 she went to work as a dispatcher at Southern Oxygen Company in Bladensburg, Md.

In 1956 Edna and Keith bought there first home in Oxon Hill, Md.
Their daughter Lesley was born on December 3, 1957 in Providence Hospital Washington, DC. At that point Edna stayed home with Lesley until she went to elementary school. She then began substitute teaching in Fort Foote Elementary School.

They then moved to there second home in Accokeek, Md. in 1969.

She began her collegiate academic career in 1970. Taking her first course at UVA extension locations in Northern Virginia. She transferred to Prince George's Community College in 1971. Receiving an Associate in Arts degree in June of 1972. She transferred to Bowie State Collage receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in education in June of 1973. Receiving her Masters degree in education with specialization in teaching reading in May of 1977.

She began her first teaching job at Oxon Hill Elementary School. Teaching at elementary, middle and high school levels. She advanced rapidly to a supervisory position as an assistant to the associate superintendent for the Southern Area of Prince George's County.

She retired from the school system in September of 1993 and began another career as a volunteer at various thrift shops which she supported charitable organizations for 17 years.

The family will receive friends on Saturday October 22nd from 10 to 12pm with a service at 12 noon at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, PA La Plata, Md.

Interment will be private.
