Albert Roger McConkey, Jr., 78, of Waldorf, MD died August 31, 2011 at Civista Medical Center, LaPlata, MD. Born April 3, 1933 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Albert Roger McConkey and Irma Sweeney McConkey Hall.

Roger graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Accounting. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 through 1956. After his military service, he began his professional career at Peat-Marwick. He moved on to Southern Maryland Electric Co-op. After leaving SMECO, he held positions at the United Mine Workers, National Gallery of Art and finally the Maryland Comptrollers Office from which he retired.

Roger enjoyed golf, photography and was an avid reader of history and science. Walking his dogs, Jessie and Barbie, was a special part of his daily routine.

Mr. McConkey was predeceased by his parents and step-father, Senator Edward Hall.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Elaine McConkey; mother-in-law, Ethel H. Ferrall; sister-in-law, Jeanne Wheatley; niece, Valerie Wheatley; nephew, Jeffrey Wheatley and wife, Carri.

The family will receive friends for Roger's Life Celebration on Monday, September 5, 2011 from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8p.m. at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Brinsfield-Echols conducted by Rev. John Caulfield. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, Waldorf, MD.

Pallbearers will be Jim Bowling, Sean Edelen, Gary Newberg, Paul Paradis, William Branick, Ralph Brown, Jeffrey Wheatley and Alec Wheatley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Charles County, P.O. Box 1015, 71 Industrial Park Drive, Waldorf, MD 20602 or Hospice House of Charles County, c/o Hospice of Charles County, P.O. Box 1703, LaPlata, MD 20646.
