Mary Catherine Bowling, 83, Retired Cancer Researcher Bowling, Mary Catherine ("Kitty"), M.T. (ASCP)

On Friday, August 19, 2011, after a long illness.

A long time resident of Bethesda MD, she had lived with her nephew and his wife in Augusta GA since 2006. She was 83.

Miss Bowling served in various positions with the National Cancer Institute, NIH, Bethesda, the District of Columbia Society of Medical Technologists, the American Society for Medical Technologists, and the Alpha Mu Tau Honorary Fraternity for Medical Technologists. She was an author and co-author of numerous scientific articles, clinical reports and reviews. Miss Bowling's research interest was the development of histochemical procedures for research and for patient diagnosis. She is the author of Histopathology Laboratory Procedures for the Pathologic Anatomy Branch of the National Cancer Institute. She was Associate Editor of the American Journal of Medical Technology.

Miss Bowling was a native of Charles County MD. She graduated from Hughesville High School in 1944 and completed her B.S. in Zoology at the University of Maryland in 1948. She completed her training as a Medical Technologist at Doctors Hospital (Washington DC) in 1949. She worked in Washington DC, Asheville NC and Suffolk VA before going to the National Cancer Institute, NIH in 1954. She was a lover of animals, raising and keeping English Bulldogs.

She is survived by her brother James Hayden Bowling, Jr; two nephews, Benjamin (Patricia) and Michael (Linda) Bowling and a niece, Sally Bowling; and two great nephews Paul M. and Thomas J. Bowling. She is predeceased by her sister Martha E. Bowling.

Viewing (11 AM-noon) and Funeral (noon) on Thursday, August 25 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bryantown, MD. Burial in the church cemetery.
