Sarah Hess "Sally" Heninger, 88, of Banks O'Dee - Newburg, MD, died February 6, 2011, in Issue, MD.

Sarah Jean Hess was born January 1, 1923, in Stillwater, PA.

Sarah graduated from the Columbia County Public School system of Pennsylvania in 1937. She then traveled to Rehobeth Beach, Delaware to work as a waitress in a family friend's restaurant called Dolly's. A couple of seasons in Delaware prompted Sarah and a friend to try their skills in the warmer weather of Daytona Beach, Florida. Florida's hot weather and the beach life of the early 1940's turned out not to be for Sarah so back north she would travel to land in the Washington, DC area.

Sarah found a job as a telephone operator at the Naval Weapons Plant. Sarah left the plant to enlist and served in the United States Navy from May of 1943 until February of 1947. Upon her completion of service she returned to work in the government as a telephone operator. She transferred from Washington D.C. to Dahlgren, Virginia in the early 1960's and also purchased a new home in Newburg, Maryland. Sarah retired in 1979 after 35 years of government service and remained in Southern Charles County never having the desire to be anywhere else.

She is survived by her friends and family John, Angela, Johnny, Brittany and Courtney.

Daughter of the late Warren Hess and the late Irma Hess.

Predeceased by her parents.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Maryland Veteran's Cemetery Chapel, Cheltenham, MD.

Father Isadore Dixon will officiate.

Interment will be at Maryland Veteran's Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
