Albert K. Ludy, 90, of Cobb Island, MD, died November 14, 2010, at his residence with Hospice following a stroke.

Mr. Ludy was a career Foreign Service officer who was an active volunteer in his retirement. Mr. Ludy joined the Foreign Service in 1943 and served as economic and commercial officer in Honduras, Colombia, Italy, Mexico and Singapore. During two tours in Washington he worked on GATT Trade Negotiations. After his retirement in 1970, he worked as Economic Adviser to the United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce. As a volunteer, he undertook economic development projects with the International Executive Service Corps in Egypt, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Bolivia between 1979 and 1992.

A resident of the Washington area for most of his life, Mr. Ludy was born in Alaska and lived in Arizona before moving with his family to Washington in 1935. He graduated from Eastern High School in 1938 and from the University of Michigan in 1942, with honors in economics.

Mr. Ludy was active in First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Downtown Cluster of Congregations in Washington, serving on numerous committees and volunteering in community service activities. He served as treasurer and co-president (with his wife) of the Board of Directors of the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation. With his wife he led marriage enrichment retreats and founded the United Church of Christ regional PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). For 15 years, he volunteered as an income tax aide in the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program in Washington.

Born March 21, 1920, in Sitka, Alaska, he was the son of the late Albert Kienzle Ludy and the late Ethel Mae Albrecht Ludy.

Predeceased by his parents; two brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, the Rev. Lindsley Lorene Buck Ludy and children, Carl (Tamara Dahn) of Auburn, CA; Lorene (Jean Eden) of Lincoln, Nebraska; Beverlie and David (Katie) and grandson, Bryan of Cobb Island, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be sent to First Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington, Hospice of Charles County or Wayside Food Bank.
