Florence Louise Mary (Kruger) Moore, age 93, of Charlotte Hall, MD and a former Annapolis resident died October 10, 2010. Florence was born May 9, 1917 to Arthur and Ann (Boelter) Krueger, who were first generation German immigrants, in Jelle, Minnesota, by the Canada border near Red Lake Indian reservation. They were homesteaders that would continue to migrate to the south of the state. Florence graduated from New London High School in Minnesota.

Shortly after graduation in 1939, the her family including one brother and sister at the time moved by horse drawn wagon train southward to Marshfield, Missouri towing the farm truck behind the wagon. The train was made up of 2 teams, one with the house supplies and one with the farm supplies and animals. To this day her brothers and sisters reside in Marshfield and her parents are buried there in the family plot. She will be the only one not to be there.

Her first employment off of the farm was as a clerk at Roper's Store in Marshfield for 3 years. She then moved to Milwaukee and was employed by the Department of Defense testing avionics equipment for aircraft.

In 1943 Florence enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Milwaukee and went into the Navy Medical Core as a Wave. She was transferred to Quantico, Va. Marine Base and attended Hunter College for medical training. Following graduation she transferred to Pensacola, Florida and was transferred into the Aviations section. She taught pilots and midshipman on the dangers of high attitude flying and night vision. Some of those aviators were the first to be future astronauts. She met and married her husband, who also was a sailor, while at Pensacola.

Florence discharge in 1953 while pregnant with her first child, Rochelle. The discharge was based on naval policy at the time, which would not allow mothers to stay on active duty. She had her son Doldon, or as we called him Punky a year later.

In 1959 they moved to Annapolis and the next 18 years she worked as a guidance counselor secretary in Anne Arundel County school system. When she retired Florence volunteered at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Annapolis and the Naval Academy Hospital/clinic.

Surviving are her children C. Rochelle Hicks and her husband Ronald of Reedsville, WV and Doldon Winston Moore, Jr. and his wife Kathy of Owings, MD; Grandchildren Kelby Hicks and his wife Anna, Courtland Hicks both of Reedsville, WV, Nathan Moore of Annapolis, MD and Chad Moore of Owings, MD. and siblings Donald, Opal and Bernita Kruger all of Marshfield, MO and the late August Kruger.

Arrangements provided by Rausch Funeral Home.
