Marvin Xavier Smith, 55 of Great Mills, MD peacefully passed on June 25, 2010 at his home. Born December 7, 1954 in Leonardtown, MD to the late Edward Leo Smith and Mary Louise Matthews Smith.

Marvin, known as "Big Merv", graduated in the class of 1973 from Great Mills High School. He enlisted in the US Navy on July 2, 1976, where he served 11 years and ended his military career as a 1st Class. While in the military Marvin resided in several different military towns before taking residency in San Diego, California in 1983.

After his military retirement in 1987, he was then employed with General Dynamics and Raytheon, as an aircraft assembly technician and a machinist respectfully. Marvin retired from Raytheon in 2006.

Marvin married the love of his life Valencia Grymes on May 30,1981 they were married for 29 years.

In 2008 Marvin and Valencia, returned to their hometown where they were currently residing.

Marvin was heavily involved in his community assisting inner city boys and young men to engage themselves in something positive.

The Pop Warner football league and several high schools were fortunate to have Marvin dedicate his time to his players. He actually took two of his players into his home to show them the way to conduct themselves and become young men. Marvin coached one very notable young man named Steven Neal at San Diego High School who went on to become an offensive lineman for the New England Patriots of the NFL. Marvin's tenure as an offensive line coach lasted for more than 15 years.

Marvin enjoyed people, loved to talk trash and joke, a die-hard Oakland Raider fan, his favorite sports were, baseball, bowling, football and tennis just an all around sports guy.

Marvin is survived by his loving and caring wife, Ms. Valencia Grymes Smith, his brothers, Edward Smith (Patricia), Herbert Smith (Karen), his sisters Alice Pollock (Furney) Theresa Mason (Daniel), Brenda Carroll (Martin), his mother in-law Clara Grymes, his brothers in-law, Lovell Grymes and Mitchell Grymes(Linda), loving nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his sisters Connie Roberson and Hilda Brown, his father in-law Rev. George T Grymes, his brother's in-law Austin Brown Wilton Grymes and his nephew Demetrius Brown.

Marvin was a loving husband, brother and uncle.

Family will receive friends on Friday, July 2, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 12 p.m. with Father Jack Kennealy officiating.

Interment Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 1 p.m. in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
