Raymond Meade Sheriff, 64, of La Plata, Maryland passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Washington Hospital Center.

Ray was born in Washington, DC on March 24, 1957. He was the youngest son of the late Betty Lou and James W. Sheriff, Sr., life-long residents of Oxon Hill, MD.

Ray grew up in Oxon Hill, attending the elementary school, junior high, and senior high school, from which he graduated in 1975. While in high school he learned the printing trade under the tutelage of Mr. McGee and upon graduation, he embarked on a career in the printing industry. He first worked at Value Engineering and Graphic Consultants in Northern Virginia, and then joined Printing Local 72 and worked at McDonald & Eudy and then Peake Printers in Maryland. In 1992 he joined the Bureau of Engraving and Printing where he printed US currency most of his 20+ year career, but eventually was honored to work in an elite section at the Bureau, printing unique engravings and medals of honor in addition to demonstrating the printing process to tourists in the Visitors Center at the Bureau. He retired in 2017 capping a 42 year career in the printing industry.

Ray's life was not all work with no play….Ray enjoyed many hobbies during his lifetime, from fixing cars and going to car shows; a decade of boating on the waters of the Potomac and Patuxent Rivers in Southern Maryland; going to Nationals baseball games; hosting and attending many celebrations with family and friends; and frequenting casinos while vying for another big jackpot on his special buffalo slot machine. And there were many many vacations…..vacations galore…..always with friends and family, here in the States, a bit abroad, primarily to beautiful beaches where fellowship, relaxation, music, cards, and partying were always of paramount importance.

Ray lived his life with vitality: he was a hard worker throughout his life, he was meticulous, and dedicated, and he had a huge, kind heart. He loved helping others--doing favors and being a willing handy-man. And he loved all the roles he played in life: devoted husband, doting dad, loyal friend (including many life-long friends), considerate brother-in-law, sweet cousin, friendly neighbor, and a special uncle…..he especially loved being Uncle Ray to all his nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews too. He will be sorely missed by all.

Ray leaves behind his beloved wife of 40 years, Margaret (Margie) Simpson Sheriff, of La Plata, MD, daughter Jessica Sheriff of Palm Harbor, FL, and Kyle Sheriff of White Plains, MD. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James W. (Billy) Sheriff, Jr. and his sister-in-law, Sharon Simpson Blazer. Ray is also survived by Uncle Ray and Aunt Cynthia Blankenship of Sunset Beach, NC, and numerous cousins, sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

The family requests that those attending the visitation and service for Ray, to please wear casual attire, including jeans, if desired.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ray's name may be made to the Humane Society of Charles County, P.O. Box 1015, Waldorf, MD 20604.
