Donna Marie Waigand McKenzie, 72, of La Plata passed away on February 22nd at BridgePoint Hospital in Washington, DC surrounded by her loved ones.

Donna is survived by her husband of 44 years, Gibson "Ed" McKenzie; her children Amanda "Mandy" McKenzie and fiancé Josiah Kohnhorst of Cobb Island, Patricia "Tricia" Shaw and husband CJ of La Plata and Wyatt McKenzie and partner Ross Hollander of Washington, DC; her step-daughter Malissa Martin and husband Greg of Brightwood, Virginia; 8 grandchildren Lucas and Kelsey McCulley, Alyssa and Payton Buckler, Kaleigh, Carson, Canton and Charley Shaw; 4 great-grandchildren; her sister, Patricia Butler of Takoma Park; nephews Jackie and Wayne Butler, Kent Carpenter and niece Janet Carpenter Clemens.

She is preceded in death by her parents Mary Pat and Francis "Frank" Waigand; her brother Robert Waigand; son Brandon and step-son Mark "Mick" McKenzie.

After growing up in Takoma Park, Donna was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Takoma Park Volunteer Fire Department. In November of 1979, Donna moved to La Plata with her husband Ed and young daughter, Mandy. Here, she grew her roots in the community becoming an avid "dance mom," devout member of the La Plata United Methodist Church, and member of the La Plata Lions Club. Donna retired after 30 years of service to The City of Takoma Park Public Works Department.

Visitation will be held at the La Plata United Methodist Church on Friday, March 5th from 2:00pm – 4:00pm and 6:00pm – 8:00pm with COVID safety measures in place. Service will be held on Saturday, March 6th at 11:00am with interment immediately following at Trinity Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the La Plata United Methodist Church or the Children's Hospital Foundation celebrating the unconditional love she had for her special needs granddaughter, Alyssa Lynn.
