Marian Virginia Smith Carey was born May 01, 1938 to the late Carrie Elsie and Ralph Tucker Smith in Darlington, Maryland. On Monday, January 23, 2017 she departed this life at home in Indian Head, MD. Marian attended public schools in Hartford County, Maryland and later was accepted to Morgan State University, where she graduated with a Bachelors in Science. Upon receiving her Degree, Marian moved to Hartford, Connecticut with her oldest sister and worked as a Microbiologist.

On September 07, 1963, she married the love of her life Rev. James A. Carey. From this union came two daughters. Marian had always been a faithful servant of the Lord. She had been involved in church starting at a young age. She served on various ministries throughout her life and was a First Lady for over 20 years. Until just a few months ago, she served as President of The Audrey E. Walls Scholarship Ministry here at Union Bethel and had done so for over 20 years. Even in her absence and through her life's battles, her dedication had been admirable.

She leaves behind her loving husband, James A. Carey, her two daughters, Sharon Carey and Pam Love (Byron), four grandchildren, Nicholas Carey, Christian Love, Alycia Love and Aliyah Love, one sister, Amy Lucille, two brothers, Robert Reuben (Betsy) and Roland Reese(Adelaide) and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by both parents: four brothers, Ralph Thomas, Earl Eugene, Mahlon Medford, John Walter and two sisters, Carrie Elizabeth and Lena Mae.

Viewing, 11:30 am until time of service 12:30 pm, Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Union Bethel AME Church, 6810 Floral Park Road, Brandywine, Maryland 20613. Interment, Maryland Veteran Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, Maryland 20623. Arrangements by Thornton Funeral Home.
