Richard Paul Harvan, 62, of St. Mary's County, passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Hospice House after a long battle with cancer. Richard was born December 19, 1953 in Columbia, S.C. to the late Pvt George Richard and Mildred (Dominick) Harvan.

Rich grew up in Pittsburg, PA where he attended South Buffalo Township School in Freeport, PA. In 1975 he attended Penn State where he earned his first Bachelor of Science degree in Community Development. He returned to Penn State where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1982. He is a member of the Triangle Fraternity, which he joined while attending Penn State. He moved to St. Mary's County in July 1982 and worked at NESEA in St. Inigoes, MD. In 1996 he transferred to Patuxent Naval Air Station and was employed at the EMI Testing Lab until his retirement in July 2015.

Rich had many interests; he was an avid astronomer and loved the sightings of the stars, moon and planets. He was a Black Belt Instructor at the Black Belt Academy for many years.

Rich is survived by his fiancée Mary Dryden; his 2 sons, Christopher Harvan and Jonathan Harvan; his siblings, Thomas Harvan (Linda) of Saudi Arabia; Stephen Harvan (Stan) of Pittsburg, PA; Marie Harvan of Michigan and Therese Ann Koplan (Ron) of Chattanooga, TN. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brother, Phillip Harvan.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., with prayers recited at 7:00 p.m., at Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Charles Memorial Gardens, 26325 Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice House of St. Mary's, Post Office Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Serving as pallbearers will be Pat Mill, Tyler Fitzgerald, Larry Wible and Lance Pearce. Arrangements by the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., Leonardtown, MD
