Weldon Leonard Wood, 81, of La Plata, MD passed away on September 25, 2015 at the University of MD Charles Regional Hospital in La Plata, MD. Weldon was born on August 15, 1934 in Ashville, NC to the late James LeRoy Wood and Elizabeth (Stevens) Wood. Weldon is also predeceased by his daughter, Sharon E. Wood (Will); and brother, Edgar L. Wood (Evelyn).

Weldon is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Wood; daughter, Julie Murphy-Swann (Tommy); siblings, Marvin C. Wood (Tillie), Mary Maxine Spence (Harry) and Glenn P. Wood (Sherry); and grandchildren, Peter A. Murphy (Jennifer) and Jenn Murphy Norleen (Kenny).

Weldon joined the Army and was a Paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne Division. He later became a police officer, spending six years with the Maryland State Police and 21 years with the Charles County Sherriff's Office, where he retired as Lieutenant. Weldon was the first President of the FOP Lodge # 24 and taught self-defense for the Charles County Sherriff's Office. He was also an active member of the National Police Blood Hound Association and President for four terms. Weldon enjoyed gardening, fishing, traveling and hunting with his grandson.

The Family will receive friends on Monday, September 28, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM, with Prayers at 7:00 PM at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, 211 St. Mary's Ave., La Plata, MD. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 201 St. Mary's Ave., La Plata, MD. Interment to follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3165 Mattawoman Beantown Rd., Waldorf, MD. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to FOP Lodge #24, P.O. Box 1927, La Plata, MD 20646. Arrangements provided by Arehart-Echols Funeral Home.
