Laura Ella Spohn, 94 of Solomons, MD died on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at Heartlands Assisted Living in Severna Park, MD, surrounded by her loving family. Born on October 17, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Edwin Hoeltzel and Dora Werner.

On May 23, 1942, Laura married her beloved husband, Clifford Adams "Bud" Spohn in Reading, PA. They celebrated over 69 wonderful years together before his passing in April 2012.

She was a graduate of McCann's School of Business in Reading, PA. She worked as a secretary for several years before becoming a full-time, dedicated mother to five children. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader and Trainer for over 50 years of dedicated service.

She enjoyed travelling extensively with her husband throughout his military career and in their retirement. Together, they enjoyed going to the beach, especially in the fall. She enjoyed gardening and had beautiful flower gardens. Her other hobbies included embroidery, completing New York Times crossword puzzles, reading, listening to musicals from the 1930's thru the 1950's, and playing cards, particularly pinochle and bridge.

She was a long time active member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, where she was the head of the Sunday school program and Vacation Bible School for over 20 years. She volunteered at Mechanicsville Elementary School for 20 years. She was also a long time active resident of Asbury Solomons Retirement Community.

She is survived by her children, Clifford Spohn II (Sandra) of Albuquerque, NM, Katharine Kettler (Ronald) of Columbia, MO, Barbara Spohn of Bowie, MD, Sally Lowe (Fran Welsh) of Arnold, MD and Michael Spohn (Jill) of Reston VA; 12 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her grandsons, Clifford Spohn III who was killed in action while serving his country in Iraq, and Brian Spohn; and her brother, Russell Hoeltzel.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. A Memorial Service will be celebrated at Asbury Solomons Retirement Community, 11601 Asbury Circle, Solomons, MD prior to her Interment at Arlington National Cemetery, which will be scheduled for a later date.
