Glenwood Joseph Coombs, Sr., 87, of Great Mills, MD, passed away on May 8, 2015 in Leonardtown, MD. Born on April 2, 1928 in Great Mills, MD, he was the son of the late Violet Elizabeth and Cleveland Jerome Coombs.

Glenwood was the loving husband of Elizabeth Ann Coombs whom he married on September 12, 1953 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Washington, DC.

Glenwood is survived by his children: Glenwood Joseph Coombs, Jr. of Park Hall, MD, Gary James Coombs of California, MD, Gregory Jay Coombs of Leonardtown, MD, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ira Coombs.

Glenwood graduated from St. Michael's School in 1945 and attended St. Mary's College of Maryland. Glenwood served in the United States Army from September 1950 to September 1952, while serving in the Army, he served in the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars, and The United Nations Service Medal.

He was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County, MD. Glenwood worked as an Electronics Engineering Technician for the United States Navy Patuxent River, MD, retiring after 43 years on January 1, 1990, and he worked as a barber for 65 plus years at Coombs Barber Shop. Glenwood enjoyed cars, cutting hair, shopping, and eating out.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 6:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 10:00 AM in Holy Face Catholic Church, Great Mills, MD with Father Jerry Gamrot officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Glenwood J. Coombs, III (Jay), Brennen Tyler Coombs, Christy Marie Coombs, Jamey Lee Coombs, and Kenneth Booth.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Lexington Park Vol. Rescue Squad P.O. Box 339 Lexington Park, MD 20653, and/or Holy Face Catholic Church 20408 Point Lookout Road Great Mills, MD 20634. Arrangement provided by the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, P.A. Leonardtown, MD.
