John "Jackie" Leroy Schwaner, 71, of Fort Washington, MD passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, MD. He was born on November 28, 1942 in Washington, DC to the late John Schwaner and the late Bessie Padgett Schwaner.

Jackie worked for the Washington Post for over 40 years. He had a passion for trains and patriotism. Jackie played basketball and baseball as a youth. He was a volunteer member of the Accokeek Fire Department and a Marine Corp League member. Jackie enjoyed going to the movies and spending time with his family and friends.

Jackie was a Navy Cross and Purple Heart recipient in Vietnam.
Jackie is survived by his previous wife, Rena DeRosa, son, Jack Schwaner (Sheri), daughter, Victoria Schwaner, brother, Richard E. Schwaner (Elizabeth), grandchildren, Katie and Johnny Schwaner, Madolyn Schwaner, and cousins Jimmy and Paul Padgett and Patsy Harper.

Family will receive friends for Jackie's Life Celebration Viewing on Saturday, November 22, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 Noon at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A. A Funeral Service will follow at 12 Noon at the Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Fountain officiating. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to: Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, Hospice of St. Mary's, or a charity of your choosing in the name of John L. Schwaner. Arrangements provided by Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home
